Artur J M Valente

Institution: University of Coimbra

Artur J. M. Valente obtained a Ph.D. in 1999 from Coimbra University for his studies on the transport properties of non-associated electrolytes in polyacrylamide-based hydrogels. In 2015 he got the Habilitation in Chemistry (Macromolecular Chemistry). He is currently Professor Auxiliar with Habilitation at the Chemistry Department of University of Coimbra, and subdirector of the Chemistry Department.
During his PhD studies he worked as a visiting scholar at the Russian Academy of Sciences and at the Free University of Brussels with Dr. A. Polishchuk and Prof. G. Geuskens, respectively. He performed a postdoctoral stage at Division of Physical Chemistry 1, Lund University worked with O. Söderman on surfactant-cyclodextrin supramolecular association.
From 2014-2018 he was Visiting Professor at the State University of Maringá, Brazil.
His research interests focus on: the transport properties in solution and through polymers and gels, supramolecular host-guest compounds (with a focus on the kinetics and thermodynamics of complexation involving cyclodextrins and, more recently, cucurbit[n]urils), and interactions between surfactants and polyelectrolytes (e.g., polyfluorenes), and multivalent metal ions.
He has published more than 160 papers in ISI international journals (H-index: 29), over 30 invited lectures in meetings and universities, and over 200 communications in scientific meetings. Besides, he has published 2 books, 17 book chapters and is co-editor of 2 books. He is first inventor of one patent. Since 2010 he was involved in 18 National and International research projects, four of them are ongoing. He is/was supervisor of more than 30 MSc., PhD and post-doc students.
Currently he is Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Molecular Liquids.
